Eugene and Makarios the Confessors

Venerable Confessors Eugene and Makarios, presbyters of Antioch.

Sts. Eugene and Makarios were presbyters of Antioch who boldly rebuked the Emperor Julian the Apostate for his rejection of Christ. They were scourged and exiled to the Arabian desert.

There they lived as ascetics on a mountain, driving out the demons that dwelt there, and reposed in peace in the fourth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Eugene and Makarios the Confessors is commemorated on February 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 4 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
