Nikitas the New Hieromartyr

New Hieromartyr Nikitas of Epirus, hieromonk of Mount Athos, who suffered at Serres.

St. Nikitas was born in Epirus and became a hieromonk at the Skete of St. Anne on Mount Athos. Burning with zeal for the faith, he set out to preach to the Muslims and was arrested near Serres.

After enduring cruel tortures he was hanged in Serres in 1808.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nikitas the New Hieromartyr is commemorated on February 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 4 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
