Eumenios of Crete

Venerable Eumenios the New (Saridakis), the God-bearing elder of the leper colony of Athens.

Eumenios Saridakis was born in Crete in 1931 and became a monk as a youth. Contracting leprosy, he was sent to the hospital for infectious diseases in Athens, where, after his healing, he chose to remain for the rest of his life as priest and comforter of the sick.

He was known for his humility, ceaseless prayer and gift of consolation. He reposed in 1999 and was glorified by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 2020.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Eumenios of Crete is commemorated on May 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 5 of the civil calendar.
