Euthymios Patriarch of Constantinople

Saint Euthymios, Patriarch of Constantinople, confessor.

Saint Euthymios was a monk and spiritual father to Emperor Leo the Wise before being raised to the patriarchal throne of Constantinople in the early tenth century. He was deposed and exiled amid the disputes over the emperor's fourth marriage.

He bore his exile patiently and reposed in a monastery, being honoured by the Church as a confessor.

On the New Calendar, Euthymios Patriarch of Constantinople is commemorated on August 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 18 of the civil calendar.
