John the New Chozebite

Venerable John Jacob the New Chozebite, Romanian ascetic of the Holy Land.

Saint John Jacob was a Romanian monk who left for the Holy Land and lived as a hermit in the Judean desert near the Monastery of Saint George of Choziba. He was known for strict asceticism, spiritual writings and gentleness toward all who sought him.

He reposed in 1960 and his relics were found incorrupt; he is honoured throughout the Orthodox world.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John the New Chozebite is commemorated on August 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 18 of the civil calendar.
