Evgenios of Aitolia

Venerable Evgenios the Aitolian, teacher of the Greek nation under Ottoman rule.

Saint Evgenios Giannoulis was born in Aitolia in the seventeenth century and became a hieromonk and scholar. He founded schools in Agrafa and elsewhere, teaching the children of enslaved Greeks the faith and Greek letters.

He is honoured as one of the great teachers of the nation and a forerunner of Saint Kosmas of Aitolia.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Evgenios of Aitolia is commemorated on August 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 18 of the civil calendar.
