Gaius of Rome

Saint Gaius, Pope of Rome, who suffered under Diocletian.

Gaius was Bishop of Rome at the end of the third century, a Dalmatian by birth and, tradition relates, a kinsman of the emperor Diocletian. He guided the Church through the years before the great persecution.

He reposed in 296 and is honoured among the holy popes of old Rome.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Gaius of Rome is commemorated on April 22. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 5 of the civil calendar.
