George of Kratovo

New Martyr George of Kratovo, goldsmith, burned alive in Sofia.

St. George was born in Kratovo and learned the goldsmith's trade. After his father's death he moved to Sofia, where a Muslim scholar tried to persuade him to embrace Islam. George answered with a bold defence of the Christian faith.

He was brought before the judge, refused every inducement, and was burned alive in Sofia in 1515, at the age of eighteen.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, George of Kratovo is commemorated on February 11. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 24 of the civil calendar.
