  Blaise

  Martyr, Βλάσιος

  St. Blaise was Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, a physician of both bodies and souls. During the persecutions of the early fourth century he was seized, and after enduring tortures for his confession of Christ he was beheaded. Tradition tells of his kindness even to wild beasts, and of a boy saved from choking through his prayer.

• Theodora the Empress

  Holy Woman, Θεοδώρα η Βασίλισσα

  St. Theodora was the wife of the iconoclast Emperor Theophilos. Throughout his reign she secretly venerated the holy icons, and after his death, ruling as regent for her son Michael, she convened the council of 843 that restored the icons to the churches, an event celebrated each year as the Sunday of Orthodoxy.

• George of Kratovo

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο εκ Σερβίας

  St. George was born in Kratovo and learned the goldsmith's trade. After his father's death he moved to Sofia, where a Muslim scholar tried to persuade him to embrace Islam. George answered with a bold defence of the Christian faith.

• Demetrios of Priluki

  Venerable, Δημήτριος του Πρίλουκι

  St. Demetrios was born to a wealthy merchant family of Pereslavl and became a monk in his youth. He was a friend of St. Sergius of Radonezh and, seeking solitude, went north to Vologda, where he founded the Monastery of the Saviour at Priluki.

• Vsevolod-Gabriel of Pskov

  Saint, Γαβριήλ ο Βασιλεύς

  St. Vsevolod, grandson of Vladimir Monomakh, ruled Novgorod and later Pskov in the twelfth century. He was known for his justice, his generosity to the poor and his building of churches, including the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in Pskov.
