Saint George the Confessor, Bishop of Antioch in Pisidia, who suffered exile for the icons.
George was a monk who became Bishop of Antioch in Pisidia in the ninth century. When the emperor Leo the Armenian renewed the iconoclast persecution, George refused to reject the holy icons.
He was driven from his see and died in exile, honoured as a confessor.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, George of Pisidia is commemorated on April 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 2 of the civil calendar.
