Venerable Symeon the Barefoot of Philotheou, abbot and preacher of repentance in Greece.
Symeon was abbot of the Philotheou Monastery on Mount Athos in the sixteenth century. Leaving the Holy Mountain, he travelled barefoot and in a single tunic through Thessaly, Euboea and the mainland preaching repentance, and founded the Monastery of Flamouri on Mount Pelion.
He reposed in peace and is honoured among the Athonite saints.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Symeon of Philotheou is commemorated on April 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on May 2 of the civil calendar.
