George of Rapsani

Holy New Martyr George of Rapsani in Thessaly.

St. George was born in the village of Rapsani near Mount Olympus in Thessaly and lived under Ottoman rule. Tradition relates that he was accused before the Turkish authorities at Tyrnavos and pressed to accept Islam, but refused steadfastly and was put to death in 1818.

He is numbered among the New Martyrs of Greece, and his memory is kept on March 5.

On the New Calendar, George of Rapsani is commemorated on March 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 18 of the civil calendar.
