Nicholas of Zicha

Saint Nicholas (Velimirovich), Bishop of Ochrid and Zicha, the new Chrysostom of Serbia.

St. Nicholas Velimirovich was born in Serbia in 1880 and became one of the most gifted preachers and writers of the Orthodox Church in the twentieth century, serving as Bishop of Ochrid and later of Zicha. During the Second World War he was imprisoned by the Germans and held in the Dachau concentration camp; after the war he lived in exile in the United States, teaching and writing until his repose in 1956.

Among his many works is the Prologue from Ochrid, a daily book of saints' lives and reflections. He was glorified by the Serbian Church in 2003, and the Greek synaxarion keeps his memory on March 5.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Nicholas of Zicha is commemorated on March 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 18 of the civil calendar.
