  Konon

  Martyr, Κόνων

  St. Konon was an early martyr from Isauria in Asia Minor, remembered as a man of simple and holy life who drew many of his countrymen from idolatry to faith in Christ. When persecution reached his homeland, he confessed the Lord openly and endured torture at the hands of the pagans.

  Savas the Sanctified

  Venerable, Σάββας

  St. Savas the Sanctified was born in Cappadocia in the fifth century and came as a young man to the Judean desert, where he became a disciple of the great elders of Palestine. In the wild gorge of the Kidron he founded the Great Lavra, which still bears his name, and became the leader and lawgiver of the monks of the desert.

• Konon the Gardener

  Martyr, Κόνων ο Κηπουρός

  St. Konon the Gardener was a Christian of Nazareth who lived in Pamphylia, tending a garden and living simply from his labor. During the persecution of Decius he was arrested and, when he refused to sacrifice, nails were driven into his feet and he was forced to run before the governor's chariot until he collapsed.

• Mark the Ascetic

  Venerable, Μάρκος ο Ασκητής

  St. Mark the Ascetic lived in the fourth and fifth centuries, a disciple of St. John Chrysostom according to tradition, and spent many years in the deserts of Egypt. He is best known for his spiritual writings, several of which are preserved in the Philokalia, including the treatises On the Spiritual Law and On Those Who Think They Are Justified by Works.

  Martyr, Γεώργιος ο εκ Ραψάνης

  St. George was born in the village of Rapsani near Mount Olympus in Thessaly and lived under Ottoman rule. Tradition relates that he was accused before the Turkish authorities at Tyrnavos and pressed to accept Islam, but refused steadfastly and was put to death in 1818.

• Eulogios and Eulampios

  Martyr, Ευλόγιος

  Sts. Eulogios and Eulampios were martyrs of Palestine whose names the Greek synaxaria record together for March 5. Tradition relates that Eulogios, a Christian of Palestine, preached Christ boldly to the pagans and was beheaded, and that Eulampios also completed his witness by the sword.

• Archelaos and 152 Martyrs

  Martyr, Αρχέλαος

  St. Archelaos and the one hundred fifty-two martyrs with him are commemorated in the Greek synaxaria for March 5. Tradition relates that they confessed Christ together and were put to the sword.

• Nicholas of Zicha

  Hierarch, Νικόλαος Αχρίδος και Ζίτσης

  St. Nicholas Velimirovich was born in Serbia in 1880 and became one of the most gifted preachers and writers of the Orthodox Church in the twentieth century, serving as Bishop of Ochrid and later of Zicha. During the Second World War he was imprisoned by the Germans and held in the Dachau concentration camp; after the war he lived in exile in the United States, teaching and writing until his repose in 1956.
