• Forty-Two Martyrs of Amorium

  Martyr, Μάρτυρες

  The Forty-Two Martyrs of Amorium were Byzantine officers taken captive when the city of Amorium in Asia Minor fell to the Arabs in the year 838. Held in harsh imprisonment for some seven years, they were pressed again and again to abandon Christ and accept the faith of their captors, with freedom and honors promised if they yielded.

• Finding of the Precious Cross

  Saint, Εύρεσις Τιμίου Σταυρού

  On this day the Church remembers the finding of the Precious Cross of the Lord and of the Holy Nails in Jerusalem by St. Helen, mother of St. Constantine the Great, in the fourth century. Tradition relates that three crosses were uncovered near Golgotha and that the true Cross was recognized when a dying woman was healed by its touch.

• Hesychios the Wonderworker

  Venerable, Ησύχιος ο Θαυματουργός

  St. Hesychios was an ascetic of Bithynia in the eighth century who settled on a mountain near Andrapa, building a small cell and a church of St. Andrew. Tradition relates that he lived in fasting and prayer, that he was granted the gift of working miracles, and that he foretold the day of his own repose.

• Arkadios of Cyprus

  Hierarch, Αρκάδιος

  St. Arkadios was Archbishop of Cyprus in the seventh century, in the years when the island faced the first Arab raids. Tradition relates that he was a learned and pastoral bishop who defended the Orthodox faith and cared for his flock in a time of trial.

• Maximos the Monk-Martyr

  Martyr, Μάξιμος

  St. Maximos was a monk whose name the Greek synaxaria preserve for March 6 with the note that he was stoned to death for his confession of Christ. Nothing further of his life has come down to us.

• Julian and Euboulos

  Martyr, Ιουλιανός

  Sts. Julian and Euboulos were martyrs whose memory the Greek synaxaria keep on March 6. Tradition relates that they confessed Christ before the pagan authorities and were put to death by the sword.
