Commemoration of the finding of the Precious Cross and the Holy Nails by Saint Helen.
On this day the Church remembers the finding of the Precious Cross of the Lord and of the Holy Nails in Jerusalem by St. Helen, mother of St. Constantine the Great, in the fourth century. Tradition relates that three crosses were uncovered near Golgotha and that the true Cross was recognized when a dying woman was healed by its touch.
The Cross was raised before the people by Patriarch Makarios of Jerusalem, an event celebrated more fully on September 14. The finding itself is commemorated on March 6.

On the New Calendar, Finding of the Precious Cross is commemorated on March 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 19 of the civil calendar.
