The Forty-Two Holy Martyrs of Amorium.
The Forty-Two Martyrs of Amorium were Byzantine officers taken captive when the city of Amorium in Asia Minor fell to the Arabs in the year 838. Held in harsh imprisonment for some seven years, they were pressed again and again to abandon Christ and accept the faith of their captors, with freedom and honors promised if they yielded.
Every one of them refused, and they were beheaded together by the river Euphrates in 845. The Church honors their long, unbroken confession, sealed after years of suffering, and commemorates them on March 6.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Forty-Two Martyrs of Amorium is commemorated on March 6. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 19 of the civil calendar.
