Gregory of Akrita

Venerable Gregory of Akrita, a monk of Crete and Constantinople.

St. Gregory of Akrita was born in Crete in the eighth century and became a monk. After pilgrimage to the Holy Land he settled at the monastery of Akrita near Constantinople, where he lived in strict asceticism through the iconoclast troubles.

He reposed in peace and is commemorated on January 5.

On the New Calendar, Gregory of Akrita is commemorated on January 5. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on January 18 of the civil calendar.
