Venerable Synkletike, mother of women's monasticism in Egypt.
St. Synkletike was born to a wealthy family of Alexandria in the fourth century. After the death of her parents she gave away her inheritance and withdrew with her blind sister to a tomb outside the city, where a community of women gathered around her.
Her sayings on prayer, humility, and the spiritual struggle are preserved among those of the Desert Fathers. She bore a long illness in her old age with great patience and reposed in peace. She is commemorated on January 5.
