Gregory Palamas

Saint Gregory Palamas, Archbishop of Thessaloniki, defender of hesychast prayer and the uncreated light.

Saint Gregory Palamas was born in Constantinople in 1296 and became a monk on Mount Athos. In the fourteenth century he defended the hesychast monks against the attacks of Barlaam of Calabria, teaching that the faithful may truly share in the uncreated energies of God.

His teaching was confirmed by councils in Constantinople, and he was made Archbishop of Thessaloniki. He reposed in 1359 and is also honoured on the second Sunday of Great Lent.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Gregory Palamas is commemorated on November 14. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on November 27 of the civil calendar.
