Ignatios the New Martyr of Bulgaria

Holy New Monk-Martyr Ignatios of Stara Zagora, hanged at Constantinople in 1814.

Born John in Eski Zagora of Bulgaria, he was raised in piety but in a moment of weakness he had once professed Islam under pressure. Repenting bitterly, he went to Mount Athos and became a monk named Ignatios under the elders of the Skete of the Forerunner.

He returned to Constantinople and confessed Christ before the Turkish court, and was hanged in 1814; his relics were taken to Athos.

On the New Calendar, Ignatios the New Martyr of Bulgaria is commemorated on October 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 21 of the civil calendar.
