Hieromartyr Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, disciple of Saint Polycarp.
Saint Irenaeus was born in Smyrna and heard Saint Polycarp in his youth. He became bishop of Lyons in Gaul, where he wrote his great work Against Heresies in defence of the apostolic faith and worked for peace between the churches.
Tradition relates that he was martyred with many of his flock in the persecution of Septimius Severus.

On the New Calendar, Irenaeus of Lyons is commemorated on August 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 5 of the civil calendar.
