Jacob Netsvetov of Alaska

St. Jacob Netsvetov, priest and enlightener of the peoples of Alaska.

St. Jacob Netsvetov was born in Alaska to a Russian father and an Aleut mother and was the first native Alaskan ordained to the priesthood. For decades he traveled the Aleutian Islands and the Yukon, translating the Scriptures and baptizing thousands.

He reposed in 1864 and was glorified in 1994.

On the New Calendar, Jacob Netsvetov of Alaska is commemorated on July 26. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on August 8 of the civil calendar.
