John Maximovitch of Shanghai

St. John Maximovitch, Wonderworker and Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco.

St. John Maximovitch, Archbishop of Shanghai and San Francisco, was one of the great saints of the twentieth century. Born in Russia in 1896, he served as bishop in Shanghai, where he sheltered orphans and the poor, and later shepherded his scattered flock in Western Europe and America. A strict ascetic who served the Divine Liturgy daily, he was known even in his lifetime as a wonderworker whose prayers brought healing.

He reposed in 1966 while accompanying a wonderworking icon of the Mother of God, and his relics rest in San Francisco. Glorified in 1994, he is honored on this day as a wonderworker of the latter times.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John Maximovitch of Shanghai is commemorated on June 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 2 of the civil calendar.
