Venerable Paisius the Great of Egypt, desert father and friend of Saint John the Short.
Saint Paisius was born in Egypt in the fourth century and became a disciple of Saint Pambo in Nitria together with Saint John the Short. He lived in extreme asceticism in a cave in the desert and, tradition relates, was granted visions of Christ and the gift of foreseeing the future.
He was greatly loved by the monks of Egypt, and his life was written by Saint John the Short. His relics were later taken to Pisidia.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Paisius the Great is commemorated on June 19. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on July 2 of the civil calendar.
