John the Chozebite

Saint John the Chozebite, ascetic of the Wadi Qelt and Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine.

John was born in Thebes of Egypt and, after ascetic training there, settled in the Choziba ravine near Jericho, where a famous lavra grew up around him. Against his will he was made Bishop of Caesarea in Palestine in the late sixth century.

Longing for silence, he returned to Choziba, where he combated the Eutychian heresy and was known for his gifts of discernment and wonderworking, reposing in peace.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John the Chozebite is commemorated on October 3. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on October 16 of the civil calendar.
