John the New Martyr of Crete

New Martyr John of Crete, martyred at New Ephesus under the Ottomans.

St. John was a young farmer from Sfakia in Crete who had gone to Asia Minor and was betrothed there. Tradition relates that at a festival at New Ephesus he was accused by Turks and, refusing to deny Christ, was beaten and beheaded in 1811.

He is commemorated on September 15.

On the New Calendar, John the New Martyr of Crete is commemorated on September 15. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 28 of the civil calendar.
