John the Ship-Captain

Holy New Martyr John the Ship-Captain of Kos, burned for Christ.

John was a ship-owner of the island of Kos who, tradition relates, was falsely accused of having accepted Islam and was pressed to confirm it. He firmly confessed that he was a Christian and would die as one.

He was burned alive on Kos in the seventeenth century and is honoured among the new martyrs of the Dodecanese.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, John the Ship-Captain is commemorated on April 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 21 of the civil calendar.
