Niphon of Novgorod

Saint Niphon, Bishop of Novgorod, monk of the Kiev Caves.

Niphon was a monk of the Kiev Caves Monastery, chosen Bishop of Novgorod in the twelfth century. He was a strict ascetic and a builder of churches, and defended the canonical order of the Church in a time of political strife.

He reposed at the Kiev Caves and was buried there.

On the New Calendar, Niphon of Novgorod is commemorated on April 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on April 21 of the civil calendar.
