Julian of Cilicia

Holy Martyr Julian of Anazarbus in Cilicia, cast into the sea in a sack.

St. Julian was a young Christian of Anazarbus in Cilicia, of a senatorial family, who suffered under Diocletian. Tradition relates that after a year of tortures he was sewn into a sack filled with sand and venomous creatures and cast into the sea, and that his body was recovered and later brought to Antioch.

St. John Chrysostom honored him with a homily. The Greek synaxarion keeps his memory on March 16.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Julian of Cilicia is commemorated on March 16. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 29 of the civil calendar.
