Hieromartyr Kosmas of Aitolia, Equal-to-the-Apostles, preacher of enslaved Greece.
Saint Kosmas was born in Aitolia in 1714 and became a monk of Philotheou on Mount Athos. With the blessing of the Patriarch he travelled through Greece, Epirus and Albania for many years, preaching to the enslaved people, founding schools and calling the faithful back to the Gospel.
He was hanged by the Ottomans in 1779 and is honoured as an Equal-to-the-Apostles and teacher of the nation.

On the New Calendar, Kosmas of Aitolia is commemorated on August 24. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 6 of the civil calendar.
