Leo of Cappadocia

Venerable Leo of Cappadocia, who gave himself as a ransom for captive monks.

St. Leo was a monk of Cappadocia who, when three sick monks were carried off by Saracen raiders, offered himself in their place as a captive.

Weakened by the hardships of the march through the desert, he died on the way, laying down his life for his brethren.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Leo of Cappadocia is commemorated on February 29. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 13 of the civil calendar.
