  John Cassian the Roman

  Venerable, Ιωάννης Κασσιανός

  St. John Cassian the Roman was a monk of the late fourth and early fifth centuries. In his youth he journeyed with his friend Germanos to the monasteries of Palestine and to the great elders of the Egyptian desert, gathering their wisdom, and later he settled in Gaul, near Marseilles, where he founded monasteries for men and for women.

• Theoktiristos of Pelekete

  Hierarch, Θεοκτήριστος

  St. Theoktiristos was abbot of the Monastery of Pelekete in Bithynia during the iconoclast persecution of the Emperor Constantine Copronymus. He and his monks were seized for their veneration of the holy icons.

• Leo of Cappadocia

  Venerable, Λέων ο Καππαδόκης

  St. Leo was a monk of Cappadocia who, when three sick monks were carried off by Saracen raiders, offered himself in their place as a captive.

• Germanos of Dobrogea

  Venerable, Γερμανός ο εκ Δοβρογείας

  St. Germanos was born in the fourth century in Dacia Pontica, the present-day Dobrogea in Romania, and was a kinsman and lifelong companion of St. John Cassian. Together they visited the monasteries of Egypt and Palestine and later lived in Constantinople under St. John Chrysostom.

• Oswald of Worcester

  Hierarch, Όσβαλδος

  St. Oswald was of Danish descent and became a monk at Fleury in France before returning to England, where he was made Bishop of Worcester and later Archbishop of York in the tenth century. With Sts. Dunstan and Ethelwold he restored monastic life in England.
