  Basil the Confessor

  Venerable, Βασίλειος

  St. Basil the Confessor was a monk of the eighth century and the companion in asceticism of St. Prokopios of the Dekapolis. When the iconoclast heresy broke out, he stood with his fellow ascetic in defense of the veneration of the holy icons, and for this confession he endured imprisonment and ill-treatment.

• Kyranna of Ossa

  Holy Woman, Κυράννα

  St. Kyranna was born in the village of Avyssoka, the present-day Ossa near Thessaloniki, to devout parents, and was renowned for her beauty. A janissary tax collector who desired her tried with gifts, flattery and threats to make her renounce her faith and marry him.

  St. Proterios was a presbyter of Alexandria who opposed the Monophysite errors of the Patriarch Dioscoros and was chosen to succeed him after the Council of Chalcedon. The followers of Dioscoros rose against him with violence.

  Sts. Marana and Kyra were noblewomen of Beroea in Syria who renounced their wealth and lived for over forty years in a roofless enclosure outside the city, wearing chains and keeping silence except during the Paschal season.

  St. Nestor was Bishop of Magydos in Pamphylia during the persecution of Decius. Arrested while at prayer, he was brought to Perge and refused to sacrifice to the idols.

• Nymphas and Euboulos

  Apostle, Νυμφάς και Εύβουλος

  The Apostles Nymphas and Euboulos were disciples of the Apostle Paul. Nymphas, whose house at Laodicea served as a church, is greeted in the Epistle to the Colossians; Euboulos is mentioned in the Second Epistle to Timothy as being with Paul in Rome.

• Barsos of Damascus

  Hierarch, Βάρσος Δαμασκού

  St. Barsos, also known as John-Barsanouphios, was a Palestinian monk who reluctantly accepted consecration as Bishop of Damascus. Longing for stillness, he later laid aside his office and returned to the solitary life.
