Kyranna of Ossa

New Martyr Kyranna of Ossa near Thessaloniki.

St. Kyranna was born in the village of Avyssoka, the present-day Ossa near Thessaloniki, to devout parents, and was renowned for her beauty. A janissary tax collector who desired her tried with gifts, flattery and threats to make her renounce her faith and marry him.

When she refused, she was imprisoned in Thessaloniki and beaten daily until she died of her wounds in 1751; tradition relates that a heavenly light filled the prison at her death.

On the New Calendar, Kyranna of Ossa is commemorated on February 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 13 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
