Venerable Basil the Confessor, companion of St. Procopius.
St. Basil the Confessor was a monk of the eighth century and the companion in asceticism of St. Prokopios of the Dekapolis. When the iconoclast heresy broke out, he stood with his fellow ascetic in defense of the veneration of the holy icons, and for this confession he endured imprisonment and ill-treatment.
When the persecution abated he returned to his labors of fasting and prayer, guiding others in the ascetic life until his peaceful repose. He is commemorated on February 28.
Feast day
On the New Calendar, Basil the Confessor is commemorated on February 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 13 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
