Proterios of Alexandria

Hieromartyr Proterios, Patriarch of Alexandria.

St. Proterios was a presbyter of Alexandria who opposed the Monophysite errors of the Patriarch Dioscoros and was chosen to succeed him after the Council of Chalcedon. The followers of Dioscoros rose against him with violence.

He was murdered by a Monophysite mob in the baptistery of the church in 457 and is honoured as a martyr for the Orthodox faith.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Proterios of Alexandria is commemorated on February 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 13 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
