Meletios of Ypseni

Venerable Meletios of Lardos, founder of the Monastery of Ypseni in Rhodes.

St. Meletios was born in the village of Lardos on Rhodes in the late eighteenth century and baptised Emmanuel. He became a monk and, tradition relates, found an icon of the Theotokos at Ypseni, where he built a monastery that became a spiritual centre of the island.

Slandered and persecuted in his old age, he bore all with patience and reposed in peace in the nineteenth century.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Meletios of Ypseni is commemorated on February 12. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 25 of the civil calendar.
