Metrophanes of Voronezh

Saint Metrophanes, first Bishop of Voronezh.

Saint Metrophanes was a married parish priest who became a monk after the death of his wife and in 1682 was consecrated the first Bishop of Voronezh. He was known for his care of the poor, his building of churches and his frank counsel to Tsar Peter the Great.

He reposed in 1703 in the schema with the name Macarius, and his relics were found incorrupt.

On the New Calendar, Metrophanes of Voronezh is commemorated on November 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 6 of the civil calendar.
