Saint Alexander was Prince of Novgorod and later Grand Prince of Vladimir in the thirteenth century. He defended Orthodox Rus against the Swedes and the Teutonic Knights while dealing wisely with the Mongols, and before his death he received the monastic schema.

This day marks the translation of his relics to Saint Petersburg in 1724.

Saint Alexander was Prince of Novgorod in the thirteenth century and won his name by his victory over the Swedes on the Neva in 1240. He defended Russia against the Teutonic Knights while dealing prudently with the Mongol overlords to spare his people.

He received the monastic schema before his death in 1263 and is one of the most venerated saints of Russia.

On the New Calendar, Alexander Nevsky is commemorated on August 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 12 of the civil calendar.

On the New Calendar, Alexander Nevsky is commemorated on November 23. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on December 6 of the civil calendar.
