Alexander of Svir

Venerable Alexander of Svir, wonderworker of the Russian north.

Saint Alexander was a monk of Valaam who withdrew to the wilderness by the river Svir, where a monastery grew up around him. Tradition relates that he was granted a vision of the Holy Trinity.

He reposed in 1533 and his relics remain incorrupt.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Alexander of Svir is commemorated on August 30. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 12 of the civil calendar.
