  St. Alexander was a martyr of the early Church who confessed Christ before his persecutors and sealed his faith with his blood. The synaxaria preserve little of his life beyond his noble standing and his faithful confession unto death.

• John and Paul the New, Patriarchs of Constantinople

  Saint John the Faster served as Patriarch of Constantinople in the sixth century and was renowned for his fasting and almsgiving. Saint Paul the New held the same throne in the eighth century and resigned it in penitence for having served under the iconoclasts.

  Saint Philonides was bishop of Kourion in Cyprus during the persecution of Diocletian. Tradition relates that he gave up his soul to God rather than be defiled by his persecutors.
