Niketas of Chalcedon

Saint Niketas the Confessor, Archbishop of Chalcedon, who suffered for the holy icons.

Niketas was chosen bishop of Chalcedon in the eighth century and was known for his charity to the poor and the stranger. In the Iconoclast persecution he defended the veneration of icons and endured exile and hardship.

He reposed in peace and is honored as a confessor.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Niketas of Chalcedon is commemorated on May 28. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 10 of the civil calendar.
