Hieromartyr Peter of Damascus, ascetic writer of the Philokalia.
St. Peter of Damascus was a priest and later bishop who enlightened the faithful with his preaching and by his own blameless example. He is the author of the ascetic works preserved in the Philokalia.
Tradition relates that he rebuked the errors of the Muslims and Manichaeans, for which his tongue was cut out and he was exiled to Arabia, where he died a martyr.

On the New Calendar, Peter of Damascus is commemorated on February 9. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on February 22 of the civil calendar.
