Poimenas the Great

Venerable Poimen the Great, desert father.

St. Poimen the Great was one of the most renowned of the desert fathers of Egypt, living in the fourth and fifth centuries. With his brothers he took up the monastic life in Sketis, and became a discerning elder to whom monks came from afar for a word of guidance.

More of his sayings are preserved in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers than of any other elder, breathing humility, mercy toward the sinner, and sobriety of soul. His name means shepherd. He reposed at a great age and is commemorated on August 27.

On the New Calendar, Poimenas the Great is commemorated on August 27. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on September 9 of the civil calendar.
