Polydoros the New Martyr of Cyprus

New Martyr Polydoros of Nicosia, martyred at Ephesus under the Ottomans.

St. Polydoros was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in the eighteenth century and worked as a merchant in Egypt, where, tradition relates, in a moment of weakness he was led to deny the faith. Overcome with remorse, he wandered from place to place seeking to confess Christ openly.

At New Ephesus in Asia Minor he declared himself a Christian before the Ottoman judge, endured imprisonment and torture, and was hanged in 1794. He is commemorated on September 3.
