Riginos of Skopelos

Hieromartyr Riginos, Bishop of Skopelos.

St. Riginos was born in Livadeia in Boeotia in the fourth century and, having received both secular and Christian education, was made Bishop of Skopelos. He took part in the Council of Sardica in defence of the Orthodox faith against the Arians.

Under the Emperor Julian the Apostate he was arrested and beheaded on Skopelos, where he is honoured as the island's patron saint.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Riginos of Skopelos is commemorated on February 25. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on March 10 (a day earlier in leap years) of the civil calendar.
