The seven Maccabee brothers, their mother Solomone and their teacher Eleazar, martyred for the Law of God before Christ.
The Holy Maccabees are the seven brothers who, with their mother Solomone and the aged scribe Eleazar, refused to break the Law of God under the Syrian king Antiochus Epiphanes. Their story is told in the Second Book of Maccabees.
The Church honours them as forerunners of the Christian martyrs, and their mother as an image of steadfast faith who encouraged each of her sons to endure to the end.
