St. Stephen the Sabbaite was a monk of the renowned Lavra of St. Savas in the Judean desert, living in the eighth century. Given to the monastery from childhood, he grew up in its life of prayer, was formed in its discipline, and spent his years in ascetic struggle, stillness, and love for the brethren, becoming a spiritual guide to many.
He is remembered also as a hymnographer of the Church, in the great tradition of the Lavra that nurtured him. He reposed in peace and is commemorated on July 13.

Stephen was a nephew of Saint John of Damascus and entered the Lavra of Saint Sabbas as a boy, where he was raised by his uncle. He became renowned for his asceticism, his gift of discernment, and the canons and hymns he composed.
He reposed in peace in the late eighth century.
