Theophanes the New Martyr

New Martyr Theophanes of Constantinople, who suffered in 1559 after returning to the faith of Christ.

Saint Theophanes was a Christian of Constantinople who, tradition relates, as a boy was taken and made a Muslim, but later returned to the Christian faith. When this became known he was tortured and finally executed in 1559, receiving the crown of martyrdom.

Feast day

On the New Calendar, Theophanes the New Martyr is commemorated on June 8. Churches on the Old (Julian) Calendar keep the feast on June 21 of the civil calendar.
